self-inflicted brain death

this is eight. i’m updating. soon, i will have no time since i will be writing a short novel at all times. it has to be 72-120 pages long, though it can be longer. i have no ideas on what to write but i’m thinking dysfunctional family story. i’m at gene’s apartment which is hot and full of nerds for no apparent reason. i want to go back to my place and take a shower and clean the juicer and sleep until it’s dark outside. it is really hot here. i think i have reading for existentialism which is tomorrow… i was supposed to read the glass menagerie but i couldn’t find a copy of it so i am going to read the cliff notes. that’s for play directing.. which is a short class in which i have to be around a lot of people who want to be in the spotlight. i am comparatively very quiet and shy. gene is reading the Hero book.. some old p&p rpg. we’re the presidents of nerd club so we have this big box of nerdy books. gene said the box was covered in cookie crumbs and condoms when he found it.

weird. yeah.

i’m going to leave gene’s ridiculous hot apartment now.

comp sci

There’s a woman in my comp sci that looks like the woman who ran Tommy the Train Engine’s train station or whatever that show was called. The one with the tiny Beatle. She was in Grease too.

I’m on the 5Questions again, and this time he didn’t put everyone in. I beat some people out. 😛

Shoes

Shoes kinda suck. If you can get a job where you can go around barefoot all day then score! I would know, cause I was basically shoeless all summer, but now I have to wear shoes again due to PAX and school and such. Taking them off and putting them on is the worst, but I hate wearing them, so I have to take them off all the time, and I need them to go to class and outside and whatnot, so I have to put them on again. Totally lame. Even though my Converses are getting better with age.

Big long update to make up for being gone

Ok. Let’s see. 8 showed up, people were here, the left, we slept, that’s was good.

Next day we got on the road at about 9ish. I had a smoothie before we left. We got gas and then went the wrong way on the freeway for a second, and then went the right way, and barely made a couple exits, and then we took a wrong one, but got back on the right way. And then we deviated from the instructions and went towards Yakima. We would have bypassed it, but it was good we went there anyway cause 8 had to use the bathroom and we got tacos. Then we managed to get back on the freeway despite the accident that happened right before we left the restaurant in the intersection we were going to use. We cut through a parking lot. Excitement. Then we made it to Seattle like we were supposed to, but we had to do a lot of spiraling around and such to find the PAX place. We managed though and still go there early to stand in the hugantic line. Once it started moving though it went quick because everyone in our line had passes already. Then we were in PAX, a wonderful fairy-land of and for nerds and geeks. Free DDR and pinball, Xboxs and Gamecubes everywhere, two huge rooms dedicated to tabletop gaming, and a theater with 1,400 capacity to show Gamers and other such nerdy films. So we did the whole run around PAX thing. We saw the Penny Arcade guys talking about such, and then we saw a pianist play Nintendo music. It was awesome, he through in 1ups and coins and such. Blindfolded one song. Then he did the whole “you only have 99 time units left” and played faster. It was awesome. There was some rap and other stuff but we couldn’t understand it very well.

We went to Denny’s and had breakfast at around 2:30 AM. Then we got really lost trying to get to Phil’s house because the people we were following kinda drove way faster than Ody’s car could go. Eventually we met them back at Denny’s though and the second time it worked. So then we got to Phil’s and all seven of us slept in his basement, even though he wasn’t there. His parents are cool like that I guess.

Next morning we woke up, and since the drivers didn’t feel like going back to PAX as early as all that, we slept in some. Thus Kait, Dimitri, Keston, and I missed our D&D fighter duel tourney, which was pretty ok since we didn’t have our characters made, and a character made in 1 hour would be pretty crappy anyway. We went to this breakfast place and I ate half the peoples fruit. PAX was the same. There was more D&D played this time… Dim ran an adventure. There was an Expo room where they were showing demo’s of D&D Online, Kait won a beta account, so come 9-15 expect some talk of that. 😛 Oh, and the Bawl’s. Haven’t mentioned that. People were drinking it by the case load, I didn’t have any except 50 of the free mints they were giving out. Caffeinated and carbonated goodness. This night we saw MC Chris and MC Frontalot. They are teh cool. Chris practically did a stand up routine between his songs, he’s a funny guy. Got everyone doing the black panther thing screaming “Nerd Power!” Fun. Ody did DDR for about 12 hours. Lost like 12 pounds.

Denny’s again. Oreo milkshake. Phil’s much faster this time. Sleep in the basement, all good. Next morning us 4 (8, Ody, Dim, and I) didn’t go to PAX. There was a going early rebellion from the drivers again, and we had to be back to campus by 6. We got some directions from Phil’s parents and got some gas, and then got on I-5 and then found the cheap gas they talked about and filled up and I got free pop for checking my balance on my card, and then we got back on the I-5 from w/o retracing out steps and made it all the way to Linfield w/o getting lost the whole day. It was bizarre. Traffic was pretty good, except for the dead motorcyclist right outside Seattle. They were scrubbing the road… don’t ride motorcycles. Anyway, got to campus and moved in and bought food and cooked and ate and passed out.

Then it was all college stuff. Figuring out books, and classes… and the club fair. The club fair is where all the clubs from campus sit at tables and peddle their wares and try to get the e-mail addresses of the frosh’s so their club doesn’t die. Kait and I are copresidents of LRPC (Linfield Role-Playing Council). That’s the name for the senate, we put Nerd Club up on our sign and got much more attention. We got a full page of e-mails and names, we did very well. Lots of girls too… dunno what’s up with that. Hopefully we can retain some of them as active members. Have to come up with some activities and such.

Then today I went to class. I didn’t go to physics, cause I’m pretty sure I wasn’t supposed to on account of I switched to the hard version so we don’t meet on Wednesday, so that includes the first day right? I went to computer science. He just rambled all day and told us to do our work and such. I have to fill out a little form to tell him about myself. tough. We’re going to be working on hardware for a couple of weeks, which is swell. I could maybe learn enough to build a good computer someday. I’ll try. No other classes today though. I normally would have bio lab, but I haven’t had class yet, so I’m pretty sure we don’t have lab. I’m going to go talk to my independent research advisor guy soon. He was in a faculty meeting. I also have been filling out applications for work study jobs… work… /sigh.

Ok, so that’s a huge rambling post of stuff I’ve missed telling people about since I was internetless. My apartment is internet plush currently, but 8’s in internetless still. Hopefully that situation is remedied soon. She’s going to be at work at the library today though, so maybe she’ll post a bit on this sort of stuff, and make some sense of it.

Nerd power!

we did drop off the internet

Kait’s new appartment doesn’t have internet yet, and I’m always over there, so that’s why there is no contact. Hardly anyway. Don’t have time to make a real post, since I’ll need plenty to cover all the missed happenings. But we’re at school surviving, and PAX was awesome, and that’ll have to tide you over for now.

Theory/Question – Post #334 incidentally

So I was just noticing that human faces are equipped with an ability to emote a wide variety of things, usually emotions. Then I was thinking about other animals and how, apparently, few have similar capabilities. Now, it’s possible we don’t understand their facial expressions or equivalents, but I find it hard to imagine a quicker way of emoting than through a face. Dolphins might use complex swimming patterns, but that still takes a while longer than smiling or frowning or whatever. Is it possible that our faces with all their many muscles are the cause of our early steps into language? Perhaps all animals have the same basic emotions, but can only express them so well, and so the emotions don’t develop. Our ability to express emotions made having them evolutionarily viable? Group cooperation is prevalent in many animal species that apparently have no special ability to quickly display their thoughts and feelings. There are other ways of communicating quickly I suppose. Smells and sounds specifically. I dunno, kinda interesting thought though.

I heard an interview a few weeks back of a guy who wrote a book about a theory as to how human society developed. As I gather it, it goes something like this. First, we stood up for some reason he doesn’t know. (I’ve heard the theory that it was so we could be marathon runners and scavange a lot of meat to support our high protein diet needed for our large brains) Then our brains grew really really fast. Like a pound in 300 million years I think is what it is. The combination of standing up (small pelvic cavity), big heads, and the single child per birthing, lead to a lot of women dieing before producing offspring. Very dangerous for a species. So, the theory goes, somewhere along the line, some woman figured out that her friend used to bleed, then she did the dance with the man, and then she stopped bleeding, and then she tried to have a kid, and died. He sites all sorts of things about blood being important and traumatic for a primitive animal, especially given the large volume of blood loss in humans as compared to other mammals. Almost no other mammals even have a menstrual cycles etc. etc. So this woman figures out the connection between doing the dance with the man, and possible death in 9 months. This is a huge leap because up until now no animal has been able to fathom time for longer than like 3 minutes. With this new awareness she is able to stop having sex. She is no longer controlled by her hormones. There is a lot of evidence about women not being aware of their sexual cycles, where as most other mammals go into heat and are keenly aware of when they are most fertile, and are also incapable of controlling mating urges. At the same time women are gaining the ability to not have sex, men are becoming hornier and hornier. If you think about it, few other species have males as horny as humans. In most mammalian species the system works like this, 1) female goes into heat 2) male take cue from female through one means or another (pheramones, dances, posturing) 3) copulation 4) birth 5) rearing (maybe) 6) repeat. In humans it turned into females turning men away, and men constantly propositioning. Woman control their destiny and so forth. Rule world. Anyway, eventually women figure out time even better from their menstrual cycles, and then relate that to the rest of the world via the moon. (The average menstrual cycle in human women is 29.5 days, the complete lunar cycle is 29.5 days) Then they teach the men. The men don’t care much until they figure out that they will die. Studies show men fear death much more than woman. The men want immortality in the form of knowing who their offspring are. Thus marriage type arrangement spring up in every known culture. Complex systems are laid out for keeping track of your women, and your offspring. From knowledge of time and mortality, and from marriage, springs the rest of society.

His theory is a little better thought out that mine. Technically there’s no evidence directly supporting it. Yeah, just thought you all should know.
