Waxing economical

There’s been lots of talk about the economy lately, and, if anything, it’s underscored how I don’t understand as much of it as I thought I did and how my position on what is smart policy seems to shift in the face of an actual test, but never-the-less, I blog to you this day a bit of wisdom I feel sure of regarding our greatest institution.  Money.

I feel confident that many of you already know this, but it has come to my attention from some of the piss poor arguments of people on the radio and around the lab that some of you don’t.  And in my experience, when some people don’t know something of the nature and import of the wisdom I reference, there is often an even greater number of people who don’t know that they don’t know it, and they’re likely to believe whatever the first person tells them on the subject.  So in the case that you are in that last category, I hope you read this post before it is too late.

The information I will impart is somewhat tricky in that it is not something that seems immediately important.  It is of the variety of being so basic in depth that it doesn’t warrant discussion, and consequently is often not taught.  It is knowledge people tend to intuit, and not know that they do it, which is knowledge of a dangerous sort, because intuition is very often wrong.

You can recognize those who are confused on this subject, most often, by their stance against business.  Now, this is not mutually inclusive in either direction.  Meaning, people who hate business are not always mistaken about this wisdom I’ve yet to impart, and people who are mistaken do not always rant about the evils of corporations.  Still, arguments I’ve had with people who seem to have an irrational hatred of business lead to me recognizing this malformed piece of knowledge as being an issue, and it makes sense those mistaken would be against our corporate “overlords”.

I’ve drawn out the wisdom far too long.  I seem to be doing that lately.  Used to just get straight to the point like a good scientist.  Maybe I’m becoming too influenced by showmen.  Now I’m rambling on tangential me.  Here it is.  In the economy, everyone can benefit.

People seem to forget this very fundamental principal on which commerce is based.  I have donkeys, you want donkeys, you have limited edition Star Wars collectible action figures with light saber action, I want limited edition Star Wars collectible action figures with light saber action, we trade, we both are better off.  It’s totally obvious with bartering, but when you put the intermediary in, money, people somehow think that if someone is making money, they must be losing money.  So remember, even though Microsoft and Exxon have tons of money, it doesn’t mean if they didn’t exist their money would be in the hands of the little people.

Let me make sure you are following the important core logic by giving an example that’s more illustrative, and less humorous.  I have water, which has an intrinsic value to people because we need it to survive.  You have food, which is essentially the same.  Now, I value my water, because if I didn’t have it, I would die of dehydration, but you value it more, because you haven’t had anything to drink in a week.  You value your food, because if you didn’t have it, you would starve, but I value it more, because I haven’t eaten in seven days.  We meet, exchange goods, and both get to live.  Seems very good.  It works even with money.  We meet, each thinking our good is worth $1 per days worth, but that the other’s good is worth $2 per days worth.  After exchanging a days worth of goods we each, by our own evaluations, have gained $1, and the global economy increased by $2.

Somehow people fall into the trap of thinking the Earth is a closed system.  (This is a core mistake for some creationists, as well)  Money is a representation of value, and as time passes, people work to create value.  We also consume valuables, but not necessarily at a pace equal to our production.  There is not a finite amount of value, and therefore money, on Earth.  This is why everyone in the first world lives much better than royalty a few hundred years ago did, and why it’s ok if the Chinese, Indians, and Africans improve their standard of living.  They’re not going to take all our money away, we’re making more of it.

It is true that our system is not perfect.  There are all kinds of ways people can make money without producing value, and those people make life a little worse for everyone.  And it is true that proportions of money can shift between groups of people.  Maybe the rise of the developing nations is happening faster than would be permitted by the slow movement of the global economy, and that those nations are taking some of the 1st world’s wealth.  But issues such as these will not be solved if people do not correctly understand the fundamental system we are working to optimize.

I don’t want to devolve into talking about petty details, but I feel a need to point out two of the obvious conclusions from this understanding of the economy.  I’m gonna state them in the positive, but their negative corollaries are also true and useful to think about.  One, business, in general, is good.  It’s never as simple as two people exchanging goods in the real economy, but usually, when money trades hands, it is good for the economy.  Two, money is lost in inefficiency of getting stuff to the people who value it most.  This means systems of finding what stuff is available, and how much people want stuff, are good.

Just think about it some, even if you think you’ve got it.  And that comment button down there works if you need it.  Aunt Sandra has tested it.

I’m denying myself you and you myself because I’m an idiot

Yesterday I realized over the course of near unconscious thought that there is a trope in works of fiction that I dislike, and what it was, and probably why.  Part of the reason is this cliche is most common among romantic stories, which I don’t care for much, but it is present in many other types of stories, as well.  I am referring to the plot, boy meets girl, boy likes girl, girl likes boy, boy does something, girl doesn’t like boy any more, boy spends the rest of the story getting girl back.  Technically, the genders can be reversed, but it’s almost always this way.

I understand that this plot line is basically a genre unto it’s own, and it’s fine with me if the whole plot of a story is as above.  Fine if you want to hear it, I don’t wanna hear it.  It is very irksome, however, when it is used as a plot device.  Like, I have a farm boy, I want him to go on an epic quest to become king, so I need a reason for him to leave this village, I’ll have the one and only true love chick get pissed off.

The device is unrealistic, or unlikeable.  Often the male (assumed to the be the one who does something) is forced to do it.  Like, the girls dad will try to kill him, and he’ll defend himself.  Bam, the girl is all, “No, I hate you,” even though she obviously doesn’t and everyone knows they’re going to get together at the end of the movie and rule the country or whatever.  So at this point I either think the story teller is ruining his characters by making them act out of character for plot development, or he’s telling me a story about a bitch who frankly doesn’t deserve my attention, or the love of the protagonist.

I can’t think of a single classical medium in which this trope is used that I enjoy.  This may be because it’s not focused on and I just now realized it, and maybe it’s not as common as I think.  I know one place it pops up a lot, video games.  The described events happen in pretty much every Japanese RPG at about level 10, and sometimes again right before you beat the game.  It’s not cool.

Try and think of movies or books with this plot device in them, that I might like, and see if you can catch me disagreeing with myself.

our father, who art in Candyland™

During a recent discussion regarding the prayer comments posted by my aunt and myself, an idea struck me.  It’s one of those story premise ideas I mentioned earlier.  It’s an idea, that upon reflection, has probably been used before, but I’m sure it’s rich enough to last a few more interpretations.  The idea was that prayer worked, and its working was a common fact and highly utilized.  So, praying becomes a kind of resource.  In my initial imagining there would be elite pray-ers, like elite scientists and elite warriors, that could sway the balance of power in global conflicts.  Perhaps nations could remain powerful, despite weak militaries and weak economies, if they had strong prayers on their side.  I also imagined the pray-ers, that’s those praying, being embroiled in the mundane parts of intrigue, being bought, or going rogue or flipping sides, targeted for assassination, and the like.

I’ve given the idea a little bit of time to simmer and have a few addendums.  Really, options that would have to be selected depending on the type of story one wants to tell.  One of these choices is whether the elite pray-ers are born with the ability, or if it’s trained, or both.  And what is the nature of the training.  Has the prayer industry been developed, are the secret prayer research labs developing national prayer secrets?  Can certain prayers counter certain other prayers more effectively than certain still other prayers?  Does a pray-er have to truly want the thing he prays for?

Another aspect of interest would be the way the prayers were answered.  Perhaps powerful pray-ers essentially have magical powers, able to summon what they want with a wish.  Perhaps the power never reaches that high, a powerful pray-er able only to tip events slightly in his or his countries favor.  Maybe the power of a pray-er is measured by how frequently his prayers are answered, but the timing and method of reply is not certain.

Going the route of super powered pray-ers seems somewhat tedious to my mind.  Essentially, writing a book about wizards, but calling their power prayer to rile up the religious.  To me it would be more interesting to investigate the idea of institutional prayer, manufactured providence, grace to order.

Maybe in this fantasy world the god is a benevolent accountant, attempting to maximize happiness, with prayers as his measuring stick.  He takes all the prayers, determines what will result in maximum happiness, maybe does some tweaking to favor certain individuals over others, and then the course of events unfolds accordingly.

I like the idea.

President Obama

It’s been what, four full days?  Not a reasonable amount of time to judge by.  Nevertheless, I feel comfortable expressing that I’m pleased and impressed with the new President so far.  I’m sure you’re all visiting whitehouse.gov frequently and have noticed how it improved dramatically at 12:01 PM EST on the 20th?  You can watch his weekly addresses there.  He needs to get a teleprompter for those.  We’ll see.

CTC = CIA

Sidney gave me some Cinnamon Toast Crunch recently because she had the revelation that she never eats it.  This morning I was having a bowl, right after I woke up, around 2:10, and I discovered there’s a secret code in the box art of this particular cereal.  I don’t think I have everything figured out, perhaps you guys can help me.  Let me tell you what I have so far.

The name of the cereal is displayed in four colors.  If you look at which letters are displayed in the same colors the code comes out.  The blue letters, iatcc, should be arranged ciact and clearly stand for Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) cereal test.  This just lets you know which agency is placing the code and that there is indeed a code.  I think it also implies it is used for recruiting.  Red, noon is already in order, telling an important time.  Purple, cmarc, is either March, as in the month, or ham rc, meaning ham radio channel.  If we find a clue pointing to a date, or a radio frequency, that should cinch that ambiguity.  Green, nntsu, is clearly Nun St.  Since there are probably many Nun St.’s in the world I suspect the bold Calcium and Vitamin D at the bottom is a clue to narrow it down to a specific region, probably someplace with lots of sun and calcium production facilities, like Florida.

Anyway, thought it was kinda interesting.  If you figure out any other clues let me know.  I don’t really wanna join the CIA, but it would be nice to know how to contact them just in case.

Personal Ethics

I think of myself as an ethical guy.  I donate blood, for instance, and I do so because I think it’s a duty to subject one self to pain and inconvenience if it will keep someone from dieing.  However, I don’t follow this perfectly.

The main problem is to do with my life in general.  I should be sacraficing my life and working tirelessly to become a great scientist or doctor or whatever and trying to solve the great problems of humanity.  But I don’t.  I spend my life trying to make myself happy.

Intellectually I think I would sacrifice my life in order to save others, you know, valiantly like happens in movies all the time.  I’m not positive, because how could one be, but I’m pretty sure I would.  But that’s not the same.  Death is not as big a sacrifice as a miserable life.

So, what I’ve concluded, is that I have a limit.  I’ve set an arbitrary line somewhere beyond which I’m not willing to sacrifice for my ethical beliefs.  Somewhat humbling.  I mean, I always knew I wasn’t perfect but this is a somewhat stark proof of the point.

Kinda sad.

I’m sure I can come up with rational sounding modifications to my ethics, or some other form of rationalization, to keep me happy, though.

Bush

Bush is leaving.  He keeps insisting history will remember him kindly or whatever.  But he’s been so clearly wrong on everything.  I hope in like 40 years they declassify stuff that shows he at least has special circumstances that somewhat a little justify some of the stuff he did.  I half expect it.  I mean, I’ll still disagree with almost all his major decisions, but maybe there’ll be 10%-25% clump that’s understandable.  Maybe?

Chocolate covered Tootsie Rolls

I ate these.  I like chocolate, and I like Tootsie Rolls, so why not?  Sure it crossed my mind that Tootsie Rolls are basically already chocolate, but surely the chocolatiers know what they’re doing.

The Tootsie Rolls are indeed mini.  Smallest I’ve ever had.  I dunno. They tasted all right.  I’d rather eat a big Tootsie Roll and then a bar of chocolate, though.

Plot device

I think of random things that would make good areas of exploration in the form of a novel or movie fairly frequently.  I will share a recent one with the internet now.

Basic Premise:

People grow to maturity and live forever in a young, healthy state provided they do not have sex.  Sex causes the beginning of aging as we know it now, resulting in death approximately 60 years later.

Explanations/Mechanism:

Evolution has resulted in a metabolism that doesn’t trigger the aging process until after it believes reproduction has taken place.

Technology exists to allow immortality, but society demands aging and death after reproduction.

Alternatives/Considerations:

The trigger is not sex, but actual reproduction.

The trigger is imperfect, allowing one to fool the mechanism.  This could have multiple forms.  Perhaps some sort of medical treatment, like a contraceptive, or, if the mechanism of aging is imposed by the society, secreting the sexual activity from the authorities.

What if one is infertile?

What about the case of non-consensual sex?

What exactly counts as sex?  Lots of details in that I’ll just leave to you to come up with.

The fun of these, for me, is that they are interesting thought experiments.  I like to consider possible scenarios under which such a circumstance would come to be, how and why it would be maintained, and the wide reaching ramifications.  I encourage you all to do the same, and not to just stick with the obvious mundane sexual question that it all began with.

I give permission for production of creative works exploring these ideas.  I’m pretty sure I don’t have the rights, but in case you were worried about being polite or whatever.
