Got lots to talk about. See if I can get any of it down. I just woke up so I’m doing this now when I have the most energy, supposedly. 😛
My family piled a bunch of hiking and camping stuff in the car and then drove down to Newport. Along the way I had a really poorly constructed chocolate dip cone from McDonald’s and finished reading Ender’s Shadow (good book). After some problems contacting 8 we managed to get in touch when she saw our car drive by. So we met up soon enough at the yurt we had gotten ($29) at South Beach. 8 came w/ pizza. I was supposed to hug 8’s mom but I didn’t do a very good job. The yurt was fun and we had a kick reading what was written on the bottom of the bunk beds. Apparently Jonny Depp slept there and has a big sword. Arg.
The next day we drove to Mt. Jefferson (took about 4 hours) and started hiking. There were some excitements along the way. Like we forgot the salami so we had to buy new but the store didn’t have the best kind, and mom left the lid to our carrying case open so we lost a backpack of stuff before we figured that one out. But we all made it to the trailhead. Then we hiked. 8 had some trouble with backpacks but after a bit of switching and playing with straps we got her set up in such a way that she could survive. She didn’t dare cross a river once that had no bridge but only stepping stones. She took off her shoes and waded. 🙂 After around 6 miles or so we got to where we were going. Big lakes and a meadow and mountains all around. About 10 trillion mosquitoes as well, but we found a spot and put up camp. My rents were kind enough to serve 8 and I dinner (even if it wasn’t very good) while we sat in the tent. 🙂
The next day we hiked up to a ridge and back. Only my sister carried a pack (she insisted). It took us about 3 hours to get up but only about 1.5 hours to get back. 🙂 There were lots of bridgeless streams to cross, but 8 managed. There was also some snow that needed negotiating, but it was even less difficult than the streams. There were some good views and 8 and I kissed at 7010 ft. That’s the record for highest kiss for us. By the time we were going back down 8 had gained enough confidence to cross the streams w/o going off trail. We got home and hid in the tents and played Yatzee (we made a travel size one that fits in a film container) and some card games. Then we did the eat and sleep thing. There was some rain but that’s part of hiking. 8 got to experience pretty much everything on one trip, but nothing to extremes.
The next day we hiked down the mountain. Easier than going up. 8 crossed the stream she had waded through before by using the stepping stones. Mom got her foot a little wet crossing the same stream. We ate lunch on the way down and lightened the load some. We drove back to Newport and set up our tents in a different camp ground. This time it was the weekend and the camp ground was filled with dogs and little kids. It was a pretty big contrast to the mountain, where we had seen nobody else’s tents the whole time, and only come across 2 people when were up there at all. We went out to dinner at a Japanese restaurant. Food was good, although some of it was kinda weird. We all passed out after that. I at least was pretty tired. After the car alarms and wailing kids stopped I couldn’t keep awake.
The next day was the day of goodbye for me and 8. That was sad. 8’s mom came and got her. Then my family did the long drive back home. We stopped at El Primo (it’s across the street from Linfield) on the way for lunch. I read about half of Shadow of the Hegemon which is very good so far. Martha’s friend came up and took me and her to see Mr. and Mrs. Smith. I guess it was ok, but I didn’t like it as much as the girls seemed too. Apparently one of the girls mutual friends is engaged now.
Today I got word that we can get bumped to the Reds. That means I’d be living in an apartment instead of a dorm and could be off the meal plan. My roommates and I have to make sure we’re all down and then we’ll confirm it. So that’s neat. Also, I’m going to the dentist. New dentist, never been, and I haven’t been in for a check up in about a year, so it’s kinda exciting. Maybe I’ll have a cavity or something.
Ok, that’s about all I can say right now. I suppose I’m missing a lot of stuff. Hopefully 8 will fill some in. I’ll add some more w/ pictures later on. We dun wanna flood you with the pics all at once though.
